Shufoog ran a quietly satisfactory race yesterday, pulling hard early on her first run for more than a year but jumping well and progressing into the back of the main bunch in the straight before lack of sharpness took a toll; a slight ease in grade and with further experience she should become an effective person later in the Winter, particularly in Novice Handicap Hurdles.
Today two of our Club horses, Misu Pete and Black Truffle, head to Chelmsford for the first and last races, which will all make for a late arrival back at Rowdown. Misu Pete has had a short break after perhaps telling us at Wolverhampton at the beginning of November that he had been on the go a while. Back at seven furlongs and off a mark still four pounds beneath that he was so unlucky off at the Essex track in March of last year, he can go well and will be well ridden by Ellie; he may just come on slightly for the race.
Black Truffle has been knocking on the door and been so consistent, with the one exception of his run on unfavourably quick ground at Brighton in August, since the late Spring and deserves things to go his way. He hasn’t actually run over six since the late Summer of 2015 and the key this evening will be that he gets a strong gallop to run into and that he and Nicola don’t run into any traffic as they swing into the straight. If it drops right, and particularly if there is a strongly run race, he has a decent chance this evening.
