I was delighted with Misu Pete last night. It was almost an impossible task out of stall 12 but they made the best of it to finish 4th. Pierre rode him very boldly and got a great position at the front. The horse travelled very well through the race and quickened up to take the lead 2 furlongs out. He just faded in the last furlong, partly because he had done a lot to get his good position and also I think he gets a bit lonely in front! In future we will have to make a point of not getting to the front too early. I still think he does get the mile, even at Chelmsford which seems to be quite stiff. We will keep going with him for a bit longer on the all-weather now because he seems to be happy enough and he looks like he will win again soon. I’d be very happy to use Pierre again; he was very appreciative of the ride.
Black Truffle runs on Monday at Chelmsford. The race is at 8:15 which is late enough but at least it isn’t the last! Unbelievably he is drawn 9 of 9! It’s not ideal but it might not be the end of the world. With only 9 runners he’s not as wide as Pete was and he can get out pretty quickly. I’d be happy to see him go much the same route as Pete did last night; get up the front and slot in behind the leader. We know he needs cover and he doesn’t race well too wide. We have Tom Marquand ridding. Our usual apprentices aren’t available for one reason or another but Tom is a very good rider and rides sympathetically which is what Truffle needs. Let’s hope for another good run.
